LASAC's presentation during the National SHA forum

The self-help approach has long been an integral community enterprise and development strategy being promoted by KNH thru its partners. The Sha aims to develop self reliance and ultimately, empowerment in the communities that the approach is implemented.

Luckily, we have Kaloy from Lasac who has shared with us the presentation they made for the National SHA forum. If you have further questions for him with regards to this approach, you may contact him directly at caliagusto@yahoo.com

Here is the presentation, as well as a case study from a sha area in Batangas. LASAC Ppt Sha Forum 2011 CASE STUDY SHEG @ Archdiocese of Lipa

Stairway's CSAP reaches Deaf children

On average, deaf children are exceedingly more vulnerable to sexual abuse than hearing children.  Further, the institutions mandated to deal with child sexual abuse cases are poorly equipped to handle cases involving Deaf children.  Moreover, advocacy materials on child protection addressing Deaf children are practically non-existent.  The above mentioned facts have propelled Stairway to extend our advocacy efforts to the Deaf community putting special attention on the protection of Deaf children.
With the help of De La Salle College of Saint Benilde - School for Deaf Education and Applied Studies, as well as the US Peace Corp, we have now provided our CSAEP animation toolkits with sign language video insets.  This undertaking represents a huge leap forward in terms of investing in protection of a particularly vulnerable minority of special children with physical challenges.  This monumental development will not only benefit Deaf children in the Philippines, but it will surely spread to other parts of the South- and Southeast Asian Region.

Call for submission of articles for AWCD members!

Do you have something to share with the network? A successful activity, an upcoming event, or a training opportunity?

Then we are calling upon AWCD member organizations to submit their articles for posting here at the AWCD blog!

Just follow the simple guidelines after the break:

KNH holds its Luzon Partner's Cluster Meeting

KNH recently held its Luzon Partner's Cluster Meeting last May 18-21 at the Raja Soliman Hotel in Baguio City. The said meeting was coordinated by the host partner, St. John Child Care Center.

Aside from the program and finance updates provided by Sir Peter and Mam Lolit, SHA meetings were also facilitated by Ms. Jia, and we welcomed the newest addition to the KNH Philippine Office, Ms. Sally.

As part of the capacity building initiatives of AWCD, two resource persons were invited to speak on two important topics.

Mr. Luis Morales of the Philippine Council for NGO Certification talked about the certification process for NGOs, and why one should be certified under PCNC.

Mr. Luis Morales of PCNC

Mr. Alex Hermoso also provided a talk about the intricacies of fund raising and resource mobilization, citing the experiences of PREDA.

Mr. Alex Hermoso of PREDA

With the majority of KNH supported partners entering into the consolidation phase, the need to discuss sustainability is a major and pressing issue now with these partners. The certification under PCNC and the pointers on resource mob provided by the two resource speakers, hopefully, has provided KNH partners, added insights on how to address the sustainability of their organizations.

The Alliance for Women and Children's Development

The Alliance for Women and Children is a network composed of non government organizations who have the conviction and passion on serving women and children.

These NGOs are all in partnership with Kindernothilfe (KNH) and started out as a loose network during the KNH Luzon cluster meetings. Seeing the need to form a network that will provide a venue for capacity building, sharing of innovative practices and collegial discussions, the AWCD was formalized last 2010 and currently has the following organizations as its members;

D'Asi  Childcare Cente
Dumpsite Children Center
Grace Christian Mission
St. John Child Care Center
Kaibigan Ermita Outreach Foundation, Inc.
Lagro-maligaya Child  Development Center
